JAN - MAR

On the 29th January I went to Gainsborough Organ society and before the show they were serving beef and it smelt divine. The audience were lovely and we had a really good night. 10th Feb it was back to Silver Threads at Marks Tey on a Tuesday afternoon and it had been 18 months since I had performed their last. A lovely crowd and always lovely to return. On the 11th Feb it was off the Hailsham Organ society. It was my second visit and this time I wasn’t ill, as the first time I performed there I was very ill and couldn’t sing but I managed to sing ‘Think of me’ as I was waiting for ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ to be broadcasted as I knew I had won but wasn’t allowed to tell anyone. In March, I was nominated as a finalist for YOPEY, this is Essex Young PersonThis is an event for Revealing, Recognising and Rewarding positive role models. I achieved this for all the achievements since 12 years old and all my charity work. The Awards were held at The Raddison SAS Hotel at Stanstead and I travelled in a mini bus with 15 invited quests for the quest list. I was awards £50 which was donated to Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity A return visit to YOURS LIVE, organised by Yours Magazine at Butlins in Skegness. A three-four day holiday break with various entertainment, workshops and other events. I did some vocal workshops and singing performances. It was great to see everyone again and a special thanks to the YOURS team for inviting me back to their great event.

Well it’s been a good start to the year and I look forward to what the rest of 2009 has to offer

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS

an McMeekan asked me this year to take part in a Christmas show at Colchester town hall. I always like to perform in the Moot Hall as not only is the hall huge so it has great acoustics, but I was asked to play the carols on my organ and used all the big cathedral organ sounds which meant I could play really loudly and with lots of oomph.
Since the beginning of October, my pupils and I have been working towards my yearly Xmas show which is held at the Brightlingsea Community Centre. After ‘Down Town Dancing’ I decided to make this years Xmas show more of a production style rather than concert style. This was a lot of fun as I got to choreograph some dance numbers to our Xmas medleys we were singing so there were big production numbers at the beginning and end of each half which made it feel very festive and was a lot of fun to do. I had 14 people in the show all together including people from Down Town Dancing, 7 of my pupils and my brother Shane. For some of my pupils it was their 3rd show but for 4 of them it was their first time. I was really proud of all of them as they had a lot to learn as we were singing songs with 4 part harmonies, lots of medleys and solo numbers. The show was near sold out and we got lots of great comments from the audience. It was a very late night after the Xmas show as after we had finished clearing up and packed everything away in the trailer it was gone 1am. On the way home I got a phone call saying my Mum and Dads car battery was dead and so once back to Wivenhoe it was back to Brightlingsea to start their car and then home to bed. All in the name of Show business though.
After a couple of lunch time concerts it was time to do my Xmas shopping. I always love to sing at Xmas lunches at this time of year as when you are setting up all you can smell is roast dinner, its great.

JUL – DEC

As of the last 2 years I had another chance to sing to the big crowds of Colchester in Party in the Park, A warm up slot on the ‘Tribute to the Giants’ night was great fun and got them in the mood for the rest of the evening – once again thanks to Don and Terry of ‘Snake in the Grass’.
It was now time to concentrate on the Summer Season at the West Cliff Theatre in Clacton, they just can’t get rid of me. The show had a week long rehearsal period with 6 weeks of shows after that. During rehearsals the weather all week was the hottest sun we have had all year. I remember during our lunch break, all the cast would go to the beach and sit on the wall and eat our lunch as a big group, I managed to get a tan, which was nice.
The summer season started on the Tuesday 29th July 2008. It was a great first night and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The summer show also featured ‘The Fat man and the Tenor’ (Comic Duo), ‘Debbie Millar’ school of dance, John Warwick (Tenor and the director of the show) and Chris Hare (The mind reader).
During the summer show I turned 21 and my birthday was on a Wednesday night show. I was driven to the theatre in a limo and arrived to the theatre with all the cast and crew there to greet me. I had the red carpet treatment, champagne, balloons, banners, a crown with a flashing 21 on the top, big badges, sash and lots of cards and presents. While I was at home, the girls from the Debbie Millar School of Dance had decorated my dressing room which was a lovely surprise. After the show, everyone went out to a restaurant for dinner and drinks which was a great social occasion. The summer show finished on the 6th September 2008 but it was a great show and I had a wonderful summer. The next task was putting on ‘Down Town Dancing’ at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester on the 12th September 2008, we did this show to raise money for Headway Essex and Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity. We had a near full house on the night and the cast really loved working in the theatre. Lets hope we can do it again next year. Another big performance was with Theatre Train which is the performing arts school I teach singing for. We had been working on a show all term and on the 28th September took it to the Royal Albert Hall in London for a one night only production. It was a very long day and very tiring for the cast but they loved every minute of it which is the main thing.
Also in September, my brother Shane and I were nominated for the Colchester youth awards for our contribution to the Arts with Down Town Dancing. We were up against some stiff competition but we won our category which put the cherry on the top of the cake for us. We couldn’t decide where to put the award as my brother and I live in different houses so after a lot of thought and discussion it was given to our Nan to look after, good ole Nan.
It’s Xmas time again and time to take part in the light switch on’s at Southend, Chelmsford and of coarse Colchester
Now I am working towards my Christmas show in Dec which will be performed at the Brightlingsea community centre on the Saturday 13th Dec with special guests. Don’t miss out. Take care and I will see you all soon.

MAY 17TH / 18TH & JUN 15TH – DOWN TOWN DANCING – Well the big day is finally here. After 10 months dedicated rehearsals, cotton, thread, needles and pins all over the place, fitting and repairing costumes, painting scenery till the early hours, paper work coming out of our ears, running all over Essex collecting props and microphones, arranging radio and press coverage and organising a cast of 18 we have arrived at the opening night of DOWN TOWN DANCING. Love, Passion, Greed & Betrayal are just a few emotional aspects that are encountered during the show. Featuring true classics from hit Broadway shows such as “Chicago”, “Sweet Charity”, “Bugsy Malone” and “Guys and Dolls”. Back at the West Cliff theatre in Clacton we were guaranteed a hard working and friendly stage crew who are good friends of ours and work very hard to make the show look and sound great. Two days before the opening night, the cast were called to the theatre for a technical run through on Thursday which carried on past 11pm and a dress rehearsal on Friday night which was another late finish. Earning a well deserved morning off, the cast arrived to the theatre at 6.15pm to get ready for the opening night. After fitting and sound checking their microphones it was costume and make up time. Back stage had a great atmosphere, everyone was very excited, charged up and ready to go. It all went so quickly. It felt like when you plan for Christmas, it takes lots of preparation and is all gone in a flash. All the cast had a fantastic time with each other as they get on so well together and we all enjoyed meeting the audience after the show. There were some lovely comments. After a short nights sleep, it was back to the theatre to go again. Everyone was still on a high from the night before and the show went great just like the show before. I was so proud of all the cast and thankful to everyone who helped make the show possible.

APR 12TH & MAY 10th – 2 more fundraising events for the Brightlingsea United church and the Gt. Bromley village hall. With plenty of Organ music and singing both were great evenings and would like to thank Andrew and Beryl for asking me to play

MAR / MAY – More Remember When and Nashville shows at Hunstanton, Newton (Wales), Rayleigh, Trowbridge, Sunderland, Grimsby, Hastings, Hayes, Southend, Sidmouth, Christchurch and Mansfield which a special show including a David Whitfield Tribute finishes off my time on the road with both shows, before getting ready for my biggest venture to date Down Town Dancing

MAR 11TH / 14TH – “YOURS LIVE” An annual 3 day event organised by the “Yours” magazine held this year at Skegness Butlins. A host of performances, workshops and everything you can think of to keep you occupied for a full three days at one of the largest holiday camps in England. This year as well as performing a classical slot in an afternoon matinee show I put on 2 vocal workshops for those looking to improve their singing voice or just to learn a few basics, both days had a good turn out of around 30 people.

MAR 8TH – Cambridge Organ Society A return to the organ circuit for a one off concert which was great to get back on the keys again.

MAR 1ST – Magic Music & Mates Our latest fundraising event for the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity. As well as the usual fun and games we had a special appearance from Michael J Fitch, one of the country’s best magicians who charmed the audience with his brilliance. I also performed a 30 minute slot with added duets with my brother Shane and then he went on to treat the crowd with a couple of swing numbers of his own. To round off my slot I performed as Sarah Brightman singing “The Phantom of the Opera” dueting with Steve Wicks from the band dressed as Frank Spencer – what a laugh. To round the night off we had Johnny and his Mates my Uncles band who got the crowd up and dancing right through to the end shouting for more. A special thanks to everyone for their time and dedication to such a worth while cause. www.helenrollason.co.uk

FEB 2ND & 9TH – 2 fundraising events in one week, firstly a local event performing again with Michael J Fitch and the 2nd as a special guest a Classical Choral Concert at Chelmsford Cathedral which I have been pleased to perform at in the past.
